There are several types of arthritis. The most common form is osteoarthritis where the cartilage wears away. Arthritis is characterized by wearing away the joint space, pain in the joint and lack of proper mobility. Most people as they age experience the pain of arthritis in areas where they had some form of trauma earlier in life. The joint never fully heals properly and over time the joint becomes permanently damaged. The older we become the more the pain increases in that area.
The auto-immune arthritic conditions are rheumatoid, psoriatic , and gout. These conditions can benefit from chiropractic care but need to be managed medically as well. This is not to say chiropractic is any less important for treating arthritis pain it is just not enough to get relief when the arthritis pain is caused by auto-immune processes. These arthritic conditions are unique in that the body attacks the joint, so as you can imagine they are extremely painful and get progressively worse.
What You Can Do for Arthritis
You would benefit from regular chiropractic care to maintain mobility in the joints. NSAID’s or aspirin therapy can ruin the stomach if they are take too often. Advil and Alleve have been known to cause liver problems if taken too often or in combination with alcohol. Maintaining proper weight will reduce the burden on weight bearing joints like the knees and hips. Warmth will help mitigate the pain from arthritis, especially arthritis in the fingers and hands. The added blood flow produces an analgesic effect and has virtually no side effects. Long walks or bike rides will not only enhance blood flow but also reduce pain by lubricating painful joints. While there is no cure for arthritis a common sense approach will serve the arthritis sufferer well.
