Yes chiropractic can help you sleep better
Yes, we all know that chiropractors help bad backs and headaches. But were you aware of an additional benefit that a chiropractic adjustment delivers to our sleep deprived nation? Well now you are and here is why.
There is a small hole in the bottom of your skull called the foramen magnum. This opening is where the spinal cord emerges from the head. There are some important blood vessels there besides the spinal cord. The lowest part of the brain here is called the brain stem. The brain stem starts above the base of your skull and continues to the top 2 spinal vertebra. It is a very important part of the brain because it houses sensory and motor connections to the rest of the brain allowing the brain to communicate with the rest of the body outside.
What you may not know is that the brain stem plays important roles in cardiac function, respiration and the sleep cycle. What does this have to do with a chiropractic treatment you ask? A subluxation is a bone out of place. It creates tension on the muscles which cause pain and it also creates a strain on the nervous system by impeding normal nerve transmission. The tension created by a subluxated cervical spine puts direct pressure on the brain stem. Think of muscle and bones blocking the opening we have identified as the foramen magnum. You may be familiar with the term stenosis, well in a sense the subluxation creates a stenotic condition that affects the brain stem’s ability to regulate sleep.
So the take away here is, if you are having trouble sleeping and would prefer not to take medication you may want to consider seeing a chiropractor. Now you could take a sleep aid which may help you out in a bind but will do nothing to eliminate the tension on the brain stem
