Women’s Health Increased Breast Cancer from BPS
BPA otherwise known as bisphenol A is an additive used in plastic. Thankfully, it’s carcinogenic properties have been outed and its use has been in decline. Along comes BPS which stands for Bisphenol S touted as a safer replacement. Well it actually can be more toxic. Bisphenol A or BPA, is a known endocrine-disrupting chemical suspected of having multiple possible health risks. So it has been removed from many products in the interest of public safety, it’s replacement does not fare so good either, according to Sumi Dinda, Ph.D., associate professor at Oakland University School of Health Sciences, Rochester, Mich.
Dr.Dinda presented a study this weekend and concludes, “Despite hopes for a safer alternative to BPA, studies have shown BPS to exhibit similar estrogen-mimicking behavior to BPA”. Her study shows Bisphenol S (BPS), a substitute for the chemical bisphenol A (BPA) in the plastic industry, shows the potential for increasing the aggressiveness of breast cancer through its behavior as an endocrine-disrupting chemical, a new study finds.
To understand this better you should know that a hormone is a chemical substance that tells another cell what to do or when to act. The receptor cell knows exactly what to do when it is told to so by the hormone. Endocrine or hormone disruptors are chemicals that can interfere with endocrine systems. The disruptors mimic the actual hormones so that the receptor cell acts when it should not be acting or it acts in an incorrect fashion confusing the receptor. This can produce disastrous results. These disruptions can cause cancerous tumors, birth defects, and other developmental disorders. Any system in the body controlled by hormones can be derailed by hormone disruptors.
When a hormone disruptor increases the aggressiveness of breast cancer we all need to stop, look and listen. Then we need to act. By removing BPA the plastics industry acted responsibly. By adding BPS, thinking it is a safer alternative the original purpose is defeated. Do women really need another health hazard to deal with ? Chemical toxicity presents a problem for women’s health and needs to act more responsibly to protect women’s health.
