Clinical trials for a new treatment studying the effects of low level laser ability to stop migraine signals is about to get underway in March. This is great news for people suffering with headaches that do not respond to pharmacological intervention. My question is what took them so long? Several years ago I read an abstract in the Academy of Integrative Pain Management describing the treatment. The use of Low Level Laser appeared to have three beneficial effects on migraine headaches not found in pharmacological intervention.
The first benefit is there are no side effects like treatments using therapeutic agents like Botox or Imitrex. The next benefit in using Low Level Laser, also referred to as Cold Laser is that the laser beam stimulates the localized production of nitric oxide which as acts as a vasodilator. The last effect that the use of Low Level Laser imparts is that it desensitized the local nociceptors, which are nerves that are sensory receptors for painful stimuli. By quieting the nociceptors there should be a decrease in pain associated with migraines.
With the new study underway I expect promising results and look forward to reading all about it. The good news is that if you have migraines and would like to try it out for yourself it is currently available in Darien, CT. Please understand my motive when I tell you that I offer this treatment and have for several years with great results. I truly enjoy helping people with migraines. By adding the Cold Laser to my treatment arsenal I have been able to help more people get out of pain. If the medications are working you do not need me, great. However the people who do not respond must keep searching for answers to their problem.
